  1. Date: May 17, 2009 (Sunday)
    Topic: Annual Spring Wildflower Walk
    Leader: Jim Goltz
    Location: Bell Forest Nature Preserve, Carleton County (directions follow)
    Start Time: 1 pm

         We will explore the spring flora of a rich hardwood forest habitat, alluvial forest and the shoreline of the Meduxnekeag River. This walk has a low degree of difficulty..we walk at a leisurely pace down an old woods road, returning up the hill requires some stamina (or frequent stops).

         Directions to get to the Bell Forest :
    1) Take Highway 550 from Woodstock (in the direction opposite from Wal Mart);
    2) drive on hwy 550 and turn left on to Red Bridge Road in Hartford;
    3) follow the Red Bridge Road past the Meduxnekeag Valley Nature Preserve signs to Red Bridge;
    4) DO NOT CROSS THE RIVER...instead go about 3 kilometres upriver;
    5) just after the final crest of the hill, there is a large farmhouse and barns on the right;
    6) then park along the road, you will see a large wooden sign for the Bell Forest. The Meduxnekeag River Association have a map on their website:

    Topic: Plant Inventory of Odell Park
    Leader: Rick Fournier
    Location: Odell Park parking lot, Waggoners Lane, Fredericton
    Start Time: 10 am

         The NB Botany Club will undertake a long term project of developing a species list for vascular plants, mosses and lichens of Odell Park in Fredericton. During this field trip (and 2 more during the summer) the participants will learn how to locate, identify, collect and press, and provide voucher information for plant specimens. Plant presses, GPS units and voucher forms will be available for practice.
    Degree of difficulty : moderate

  4. Date: June 20, 2009 (Saturday)
    Topic: The Plants of the Grande Plaine of Miscou Island
    Leader: This will be an open field trip with some guidance from our members from the Acadian Peninsula
    Location: Grande Plaine, Miscou Island (meeting place to be determined)
    Start Time: 10 A.M.

         Come and spend the day on the vast expanse of the Grande Plaine of Miscou Island in the extreme Northeast of the province. A list of the plants (including rare ones) will be available. Come and enhance you identification skills (with the aid of many experts).
    Degree of difficulty : moderate

  5. Date: July 4, 2009 (Saturday) (2nd Field Trip)
    Topic: Plant Inventory of Odell Park

    Location: Odell Park parking lot, Waggoners Lane, Fredericton

  6. Date: July 18 & 19, 2009 (Saturday & Sunday)
    Topic: The Flora of Campobello Island
    Leaders: This will be an open weekend field trip with supervision by Rick Fournier and guidance from many experts.
    Location: Campobello Island, Roosevelt Park Visitor Center (off Route 774)
    Start Time: 10 am (Saturday & Sunday)

         This portion of New Brunswick has seldom been explored for plants. We will be visiting trails within Roosevelt Campobello International Park and Herring Cove Provincial Park. As well, we will be searching for the rare Boreal Felt Lichen.
    Degree of difficulty : easy to moderate
    Note : to get to Campobello Island you must take a no-pay ferry to Deer Island, then a $15 ferry to Campobello Island.

  7. Date:August 1, 2009 (Saturday) (3rd Field Trip)

    Topic: Aquatic and Shore Plants of Mud Lake, near Sussex
    Leaders: Gart Bishop & Debby Peck
    Location: Mud Lake, near Sussex (meeting place to be determined)
    Start Time: 10 am

         This will be our only aquatic flora field trip for the season...bring your waders and a canoe if you wish...dissecting microscopes will be available to closely examine and identify these challenging plants, especially with the help of our knowledgeable leaders.

    Topic: Boulderwalk Trail, Spednic Lake Provincial Park
    Leaders: This will be an open field trip with supervision by Rick Fournier.
    Location: Spednic Lake Provincial Park (directions will be provided for participants)
    Start Time: 10 am

         Our last field trip of the season will examine the plants along the 4.8 km Boulderwalk Trail, in a hardwood & mixedwood forest ridge strewn with glacial boulders.
    Degree of difficulty : easy

    Guest Speakers: TBA

          Our main topic for this fall's AGM will be a pictorial presentation of the plants that have been found in NB since Hal Hinds' 2nd edition of the NB Flora (2000). We hope to present the plants in order to help you identify them in the field.
